THIS IS ME!

A few notes on my life in photography.

I started taking photos in 1975. I was given a Halina camera, and as my father worked for GAF, I had access to slide film.

I had no idea what I was doing, so I set all the controls to the middle of their dials and I was off. Through sheer luck I got some reasonable results – and I was hooked.

When I was doing my A levels I had the opportunity to study photography in a more formal way and soon worked my way up to a Zenit E with a number of cheap lenses. By the end of the 6th form, (now with a Minolta XG2) I’d learnt a lot, picked up a qualification and even had my own darkroom at home. (Well, everyone else called it the bathroom.)

After two years working as a civil servant in the Prison Department, I had a choice; be promoted or go to university.

After choosing the university route, I soon found myself president of the photographic society and teaching photography to an assorted collection of undergraduates, postgraduates, and lecturing staff.

By the time I left university I’d joined the RPS and was convinced that teaching was for me.

The next few years saw an accumulation of paperwork. Two City and Guilds in Photography, a HNC, and of course, my Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I taught A level photography in the local Adult Education centre while working in industry and Higher Education as a trainer, and eventually moved into Further Education as a lecturer.

I’ve taught GCSE photography, A level photography, as well as Btec National and City and Guilds in the subject.

On other fronts, I’ve taught Sociology, Business Studies and Economics to A level. I’ve taught GCSE Maths, Psychology and Engineering. As a specialist Lecturer in Learning Support, I’ve guided many students with Specific Learning Difficulties through a large number of courses.

And of course, I’ve taken on quite a few photographic jobs. I regularly photograph weddings, portraits, and corporate assignments.

Although much of what I do is digital, I have a huge amount of experience with film cameras, from sub-miniature, through 35mm and medium format, to large format 5x4 and 10x8 cameras.

My Albelli Monochrome project book. Another way of producing a final piece for an exam, or just as a alternative to a traditional album.

Although I've had membership of the istock by Getty images stock site for ages, I've recently begun to upload images more seriously. To see more of my images, please look here
